It's Over: ICANN Terminates RegisterFly's Domain Registrar Accreditation

RegisterflyThe party is over for Kevin Medina. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) announced in a letter to Mr. Medina that RegisterFly will cease operating as an ICANN-Accredited Registrar on March 31, 2007.

ICANN also terminated RegisterFly's right to use the ICANN Accredited Registrar logo on its website. The logo however is still visible in the left lower corner of RegisterFly's homepage.

According to ICANN, RegisterFly will be required to unlock and provide all necessary Authinfo codes to allow domain name transfers to occur. Any and all registrants wishing to transfer away from RegisterFly between now and March 31 should be allowed to do so efficiently and expeditiously.

"Terminating accreditation is the strongest measure ICANN is able to take against RegisterFly under its powers," Dr. Paul Twomey, President and CEO of ICANN said on Friday. "ICANN has been frustrated and distressed by recent management confusion inside RegisterFly. I completely understand the greater frustration and enormous difficulty that this has created for registrants."

On March 31 ICANN will approve a bulk transfer of all current RegisterFly domain names to another ICANN accredited Registrar. "Of course, RegisterFly does not have to wait till then. They can request ICANN to approve a bulk transfer immediately. I call on RegisterFly to act in the interests of registrants and seek such a transfer from us straight away," Dr. Twomey said.

These developments do not come as a surprise. As the Daily Domainer and others had reported, RegisterFly's clients had been facing numerous problems including fraudulent charges to their credit cards and wrongly expired domains. ICANN has been criticized for not having taken action sooner.

  2. I am extremely happy with the recent move by ICANN, I was worried that this internationally recognized body wasn't going to stand up for the 000'S of Domian Holders who have been seriously effected over the past year or more. We nearly lost 1/3 of our portfolio, they still compouned 1 of our Domains.

So thank you ICANN this is what consumers expect of an organization like your's. Remember if you are going to proviode accreditaion to a company with you certification you must be prepared to police that authorization and ensure that they are running their business properly or else if makes amockery out of your organization.

Maybe there should be a 1 year oversite period by ICANN for any company that stands to have your approval and registration.

ICANN accreditaion = trust that has now been restored.

    Regards

  3. The problem is that ICANN was not standing up for the 000'S of domain holders. ICANN have know about the Registerfly problem for 2-3 years and done nothing. In that years thousands of domains hvae been lost and ICANN have been aware of it. ICANN have failed to do their job. ICANN has shown the world how incompetent they really are. And if it was not that the US government have been putting the pressure of the rest of the world to keep the control over internet ICANN would not have had their role today. In the next few years we will see a change and the ICANN role will be spread around the globe. That good because ICANN is incompetent and have truly showed it in the Registerfly case.

  4. There is now a class action lawsuit against RegisterFly. Not just RegisterFly, but also ICANN who let this happen, and eNom who had a role in it too. This has been filed in court and was at first sealed, but now it is open to to the public, you can read all the documents at http://www.registerfly-lawsuit.com. In an incredible coincidence (not), ICANN revoked RF's accreditation after being served with papers over this lawsuit.
