Tokelau: Renaming The Internet 2.0

Dot TKAs a result of SiteAdvisor's report on the world's most dangerous domains, Tokelau, which is a colonial territory of New Zealand that offers free .tk domain registrations, has been widely reproached and even ridiculed for its perceived failure to properly regulate its domain extension. Here are some of the headlines:

In reality, Tokelau has no direct control over its domain. Dot TK, the .tk registrar, whose slogan is "Renaming the Internet", is managed by Taloha Inc. The company runs offices in San Francisco, London and Amsterdam and was granted a 9-year license by the Tokelau government in 2001.

Probably in response to the recent controversy, Dot TK just announced that it is slated to launch Dot TK 2.0 at this year’s Ad-Tech Show, which takes place in San Francisco from April 24 to 26.

Some of the new features of Dot TK 2.0 include (hopefully!) a new logo, an improved user interface, a fully automated Dot TK WatchDot tool that will continuously check for illicit content on newly registered websites, as well as no more pop-up ads.

However, .tk websites will not be completely ad-free. Instead of the ads appearing as pop-ups, they’ll appear as advertisements that are embedded in the .tk websites.

Even with all of the changes, Dot TK still has kept some old policies in place. The company says the upgrades aren’t going to cost .tk domain name holders a thing. .tk domains will continue to be free.
