.ru Grows by 60.78% Despite Overcharging by Resellers
According to RU-Center, the largest domain name registrar of Russian domains, the number of second-level .ru domain names (www.name.ru) grew by 60.78% in 2006 compared with 2005. More than 718,236 .ru domains are now registered.
"This impressive growth was due to vigorous development of the IT branch in Russia and, secondly, due to the .ru domain's traditional popularity with Russian users," said Andrei Vorobyov, the RU Center's public relations director.
Domainers who register a .ru domain directly at RU-Center pay only $20 for the first year and $15 for each year thereafter. Most resellers charge significantly more; the Daily Domainer found prices of up to $115 per year.
