Argentinian Domains Still Free, But Changes Coming

At the time of writing, Argentinian domains (.com.ar) are the only domains in the world that can be registered absolutely free.

That might be about to change. And strikingly, both domainers and end users are interested in getting the Argentinian domain registry to start charging annual maintenance fees on all registered domains.

End users favor the idea simply because most .com.ar domains are taken. A handful of companies has hoarded tens of thousands of domains in the hope of reselling a small percentage of them to desperate end users at high prices.

Domainers support the idea because they believe that many registered - but unused - domains would become available again, resulting in a new business avenue for individual domainers.

Dissenting voices warn against the commercialization of .com.ar domains. They want to ensure that every Argentinian citizen and resident will continue to have the ability to set up his own domain at no cost.

  1. I think is a good idea to charge a small fee for register .com.ar domains, to prevent massive registrations from the same people.

And is better to make expire the domains the owner don't care about them.
