.info Breaks 4 Million Barrier

As of today there are more than 4 million .info domains! .info remains the sixth most popular domain extension after .com, .de, .net, .org and .uk:

Domain Statistics
02/20/2007

  .com 64,837,168
  .de 10,691,043
  .net 9,085,739
  .org 5,763,241
  .uk 5,614,591
  .info 4,015,662
  .eu 2,542,043
  .biz 1,618,520
  .us 1,197,480

.info was one of the seven new generic top-level domains announced by ICANN in late 2000 (.biz, .info, .name, .pro, .aero, .coop, and .museum.) .info was originally intended for informative websites and has proven to be the most successful of the new extensions. At one time several domain name registrars offered .info domains for free for the first year, which led to a large number of registrations and many paid renewals.

  1. Congratulations are in order I guess! :)

  2. Being Dutch, I'd like to point out that *more than two million* .nl domains have been registered

(I don't know the exact number, but the two million mark was reached on August 10, 2006; see: http://www.2miljoenste.nl/ )

  3. According to http://www.domeinenbank.nl/ the actual number for .nl domains was 2,246,415 on Feb. 12, 2007, so it is unlikely to catch up with .eu but well ahead of .biz! :-)

  4. Any other popular TLDs? Australia? China? Japan? Italy?

  5. I am sure, "info" will overtake .uk and .org in near future

  6. I believe .CN has surpassed the 4 million mark. This ccTLD has increased from just over 1 million in 2006 to over 4 million as of Sep-07. Certainly worth a footnote. :-)
