The Latest Domain Statistics

VeriSign released the latest issue (PDF file) of its quarterly Domain Industry Brief, providing us with an update on the latest domain statistics.

By the end of June 2008, there were more than 168 million registered domains, which represents a growth of 22% over the preceding 12 month period.

In terms of registrations, .com remains the largest top level domain, followed by .de, .cn, .net, .uk and .org:

Other interesting facts:

  • In the first quarter of 2008, 74% of expiring .com and .net domains were renewed by their owners, which is within the historical range of 74% to 77%.
  • 68% of all .com and .net domains resolve to live websites consisting of more than one page, 22% are parked (this includes PPC domains, websites under construction and sites consisting of only one page) and the remaining 10% do not have a website of any kind.
  • VeriSign processed peak loads of more than 48 billion daily DNS queries for .com and .net domains. Average numbers were not released for this year; in the fourth quarter of 2006 the average had been 25 billion queries per day, compared to 1 billion queries per day in 2000.

  1. This is a great chart, it re-afirms that .com still remain the most desirable domains. Great post thanks.

  6. Thanks for providing this post. Although the PDF file does not seem to load up for me, so all I can see is the image within the blog post. Not sure if the PDF URL has changed. It probably has.

Either way its good to see .com as the biggest. Com Domain Names will always be at the top I think.

  7. Interesting post and chart. I do think that .com will always be the most preferred domain (at least in North America) as it is basically habit now for most users. People seem to remember the domain name, but not always the domain extension. I'll bet that many end up on the .com version first before realizing that they were looking for .net, or .org, etc.

  8. .com is local and global the united states has gone .us the .com is the most prized domain name in the world.

  9. Yeah…a lot of the reasons for the Domain increase is the profit of flipping them for a profit on ebay or other popular sits like Godaddy. Those are some good stats though
